Grammatisation

The process of transforming a temporal continuum into a spatial discrete (“grammes”), making it possible to formalise and reproduce human behaviours through their exteriorisation in technical supports.

In Bernard Stiegler's work, grammatisation designates the process by which the temporal flows of human experience are captured, discretised and fixed in technical supports. The term comes from gramme (trace, letter): to grammatise is to transform a continuum into reproducible discrete elements — “to discretise with a view to reproducing”.

This process constitutes the technical history of human memory. Writing grammatises speech by fixing it in letters; the phonograph grammatises the voice; the cinematograph grammatises movement; the digital grammatises behaviours, gestures, calculations. Each stage of grammatisation produces new tertiary retentions and transforms the conditions of individuation.

Grammatisation is a pharmacological process: it enables the transmission and accumulation of forms of knowledge (remedy), but it also makes possible their capture and exploitation (poison). The contemporary stakes are crucial: the digital grammatises not only language but behaviours, emotions, cognitive processes. LLMs represent an advanced stage of the grammatisation of language and thought — with all the associated risks of proletarianisation.

Conceptual necessity: This concept makes it possible to understand how information technics transform our cognitive capacities. It is not technics in general that poses a problem, but the specific modalities of grammatisation — who grammatises what, for whose benefit, with what effects on individuation.

What this concept is not

  • Not a condemnation of writing. Grammatisation is constitutive of humanity — there is no pure “before”.
  • Not a technical determinism. The effects depend on the uses, the politics and the economies of grammatisation.
  • Not reducible to the digital. The digital is a stage of grammatisation, not its invention.
  • Technophobia. To reject grammatisation wholesale would amount to rejecting culture itself.
  • Nostalgia for the oral. The opposition between oral and written is outdated — every human culture is already technical.
  • Fetishism of the discrete. Grammatisation never captures everything — there always remains something continuous, something unsayable.

Examples

Alphabetic writing

The first great stage of grammatisation. Living speech is transformed into letters (grammes) inscribed on a support. This grammatisation makes philosophy, law and science possible — but Plato was already wary of it as a pharmakon weakening living memory.

The phonograph and cinema

The analogue stage: voice and movement become reproducible. Edison grammatises sound, the Lumière brothers grammatise the moving image. The sensible itself enters the era of industrial reproduction — with the effects analysed by Benjamin (loss of the aura).

LLMs and the grammatisation of language

Language models represent an advanced grammatisation: human language is tokenised, statistically modelled, rendered reproducible. This grammatisation enables powerful uses but risks proletarianising the capacity to think and to write.

Improvised jazz resists grammatisation: each performance is singular, non-reproducible, anchored in the moment. Even when recorded (grammatised), improvisation retains a dimension that escapes discretisation — the event of creation.

The concept in detail

Discretisation

The fundamental operation of grammatisation: transforming a continuous flow into distinct, manipulable units. Speech becomes letters, sound becomes digital samples, behaviour becomes data. This discretisation is the condition of technical reproducibility.

Gramme

The discrete unit resulting from grammatisation, inscribed in a technical support of memory. Grammes are the “atoms” of tertiary retentions: letters, notes, pixels, bits. The term evokes Derrida's grammatology — writing as arche-trace.

Reproducibility

The aim of grammatisation: to render reproducible what was singular and ephemeral. Speech can be reread, the gesture can be replayed, the calculation can be automated. This reproducibility is the condition of transmissible knowledge but also of industrial exploitation.

Three historical stages

Stiegler distinguishes three major epochs of grammatisation:

  • Literal: Alphabetic writing (ancient Greece) — grammatisation of speech
  • Analogue: Phonograph, cinematograph (19th–20th centuries) — grammatisation of the sensible
  • Digital: Computing, the internet, AI — grammatisation of behaviours and calculations

Exteriorisation vs interiorisation

At the digital stage, grammatisation exteriorises cognitive functions (reading, calculation, memory) without corresponding interiorisation. The risk is a dissociation: machines “know” in our place without our knowing. This is the mechanism of proletarianisation.

Digital interactivity

The specificity of the digital stage: grammes become “manipulable” by the user. Interactivity opens up new possibilities (contribution, creation) but also new forms of capture (tracking, exploitation of behavioural data).
