Tertiary retention

Memory traces externalised in technical supports (writing, recording, the digital) that condition our individual memories and enable the transgenerational transmission of knowledge.

Tertiary retention is a concept developed by Bernard Stiegler that extends the Husserlian phenomenology of temporal consciousness. Husserl distinguished primary retention (immediate perception linking successive elements — for instance, retaining the previous note in order to perceive a melody) and secondary retention (recollection, the interpretative memory shaped by past experience). Stiegler adds a third level: tertiary retentions, which he describes as epiphylogenetic because they lie outside biological memory.

Tertiary retentions are external technical supports — writing, books, recordings, the digital — that make it possible to fix, store and transmit memory beyond the individual and beyond the generations. They constitute the condition of possibility of culture and of human history. The human being is “originarily technical” precisely because its memory is always already externalised in supports.

The contemporary stake is crucial: digital platforms (Google, social networks, LLMs) seek to become “THE tertiary retention of our secondary retentions” — that is, to control what we memorise and how we interpret our experience. Whoever controls tertiary retentions controls attention and, ultimately, collective consciousness.

Conceptual necessity: This concept makes it possible to understand why memory technologies (from writing to LLMs) are never neutral but constitute fundamental stakes of power. It provides the theoretical framework for thinking a politics of collective memory in the face of digital platforms.

What this concept is not

  • Not a rejection of technics. The human is “originarily technical” — there is no “pure” memory prior to supports.
  • Not a technological determinism. Tertiary retentions condition but do not mechanically determine consciousness.
  • Not a nostalgia for the oral. Stiegler does not prize a “living” memory over a “dead” one — this opposition is superseded.
  • Overestimating the power of supports. Individuals retain a capacity for resistance and for the critical reappropriation of tertiary retentions.
  • Confusing it with “external memory”. Tertiary retention is not merely storage — it actively transforms what it preserves.
  • Ignoring non-digital tertiary retentions. Architecture, rituals and institutions are also tertiary retentions.

The melody and the record

Stiegler's pedagogical example for explaining the three levels. Listening to a melody mobilises primary retention (linking the successive notes), secondary retention (interpreting according to our musical memories), and potentially a tertiary retention (the record that fixes and transmits the melody beyond the instant).

LLMs as tertiary retentions

Language models constitute a new form of tertiary retention: a collective externalised memory, trained on humanity's written traces. A crucial stake: these systems are controlled by a few players (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic) who shape what we can collectively “remember”.

Recommendation algorithms

“From Google to Flickr, all the major players of the web want to be THE tertiary retention of our secondary retentions.” Algorithms decide what deserves our attention, shaping our selective memory and our interpretation of the world.

The concept in detail

Primary retention (Husserl)

Immediate memory that retains the preceding instant in order to perceive a continuity. The canonical example is melody: we retain the previous note in order to hear a musical sequence rather than isolated sounds. Without primary retention, there is no perception of the temporal flow — we would be locked into an eternal, atomised present.

Secondary retention (Husserl)

Recollection, the interpretative memory shaped by past experience. The same melody is perceived differently according to our earlier listenings, our affective associations, our musical culture. Secondary retentions select and filter what is retained from primary retentions — they constitute our mnemonic singularity.

Tertiary retention (Stiegler)

Memory externalised in technical supports. The record, the book, the digital file preserve and transmit memory beyond individual life. This externalisation is the condition of culture and of history. But tertiary retentions are not neutral: they condition in return our primary and secondary retentions.

Epiphylogenesis

A term coined by Stiegler (epi-phylo-genesis: “outside the lineage”) to designate this technical memory situated outside biological life. Distinct from genetic memory (phylogenesis) and individual memory (ontogenesis), epiphylogenesis constitutes a third type of memory that is properly human — what makes the human being “originarily technical”.

Hypomnemata

A Greek term taken up from Foucault, designating external supports of memory (notebooks, registers, libraries). Plato criticised writing as hypomnesis (dead, external memory) opposed to anamnesis (living, internal thought). Stiegler moves beyond this binary opposition: all human memory is always already mediated by technical supports.

Reciprocal conditioning

Tertiary retentions are not mere passive receptacles: they actively condition our primary and secondary retentions. The technical support shapes what we perceive and memorise. The passage from the oral to the written, and then to the digital, fundamentally transforms our temporal consciousness and our relation to the world.
